The stabbings were early Friday morning at a house along Southwest 32 Court, near 15 Avenue. The man injured ran to a neighbor’s home to ask for help, and police officers responded, police said.

Jose Monier, the suspect, fought back when Fort Lauderdale police officers arrested him, according to Casey Liening, a spokeswoman for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.

“I saw police chasing someone,” Alejandra Hoyos, a neighbor, said. “Ten minutes later, I saw the lady’s son handcuffed.”

According to Liening, police officers expected the man injured “to make a full recovery,” and the woman who suffered “life-threatening injuries” to remain hospitalized on Friday.

Hoyos and Angel Peña, both long-time neighbors of the victims, said Monier had stabbed his mother and stepfather. Liening did not identify the victims or define their relationship to Monier.

“This remains an ongoing investigation,” Liening wrote in a statement on Friday night.

Inmate records show Broward Sheriff’s Office correctional deputies held Monier on Friday night at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale. Monier has a criminal record in Broward County.

Police officers had arrested Monier, then 25, for a battery in a domestic violence case in 2016 in Fort Lauderdale, court records show. He was found guilty, but a Broward County judge did not enter a formal conviction and chose to place him on probation, records show.

Police officers arrested Monier, then 21, for battery in a domestic violence case on Jan. 13, 2013, in Hallandale Beach, court records show. He was found guilty, but a Broward County judge did not enter a formal conviction and chose to place him on probation, records show.

A woman requested a temporary restraining order in Broward County against Monier, then 19, on Nov. 29, 2010, but voluntarily dismissed the action on Dec. 12, 2010, records show.

Broward County inmate records show Monier faced charges of premeditated attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and battery on a police officer.

Detectives asked anyone with information about cases in Broward County to call Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 to remain anonymous.
