According to the report, the suspect, Jose Leonardo Monier, 34, stabbed his mother, Adis Melba Haber, and his stepfather, Ernesto Alvarez, early Friday morning inside their home along Southwest 32nd Court, near 15th Avenue.

Police said the incident began after Haber saw her son cooking a steak and told him to stop because it was not to be eaten until the next day.

Monier refused to stop cooking and the two got into a verbal argument, authorities said.

Police said Haber then started to look for her headphones and noticed Monier was wearing them.

According to the report, Haber asked her son if he was using her headphones. He said he was and refused to give them back, police said.

Authorities said Haber then went to her bedroom where Alvarez was attempting to fall asleep and asked him to help her retrieve her headphones.

He told her to let it go and just call the police and have her son arrested as he had told her he would kill her, police said.

According to the report, Monier then broke down the bedroom door and began stabbing his mother multiple times.

Alvarez threw a glass bottle at Monier in an attempt to stop him, but Monier then charged at him, cutting him on the left side of his mouth and tongue with the same kitchen knife he attacked his mother with, the report stated.

Police said Alvarez was eventually able to run out of the house and flagged down a passing vehicle as Monier chased him.

According to the report, Haber had been stabbed in her chest and both arms. She was rushed into emergency surgery and was later placed in the ICU. Her longtime prognosis is uncertain.

Detectives said Haber was unable to be interviewed due to her condition, but Alvarez said he wished to press charges against Monier.

Monier was arrested on charges of attempted premeditated murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and battery on an officer or firefighter.

As of Monday afternoon, he was being held at the North Broward Bureau without bond.
