NYC man jailed for 2022 I-95 crash that killed 2 in South Florida; he was drunk and unlicensed: FHP

Nick-Quan Francis

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A New York City man visiting South Florida in 2022 was drunk when he crashed on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale, killing two of his passengers, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said he was also not supposed to be driving in the first place. Nick-Quan Francis, 30, of the Bronx, is now facing six felonies following his arrest in Queens, more than three years after the crash; records show he was booked into the Broward County jail on Tuesday.

The wreck happened just after 6:15 a.m. on May 8, 2022, near Interstate 595.

Troopers said Francis, then 27, was driving a rented 2021 Honda Civic with three passengers and slammed it into an impact attenuator, killing two of them and injuring himself and the other passenger. The victims’ names were redacted from a publicly-available FHP report.

That report states that a witness told investigators that Francis was in town to DJ at a party at Fancy Loaf Caribbean Bakery & Restaurant at 1014 NE 215th St. in Miami-Dade’s unincorporated Ives Estates area.

The group, the witness said, had been drinking all night and was coming back from the party when the wreck happened. Troopers said that witness told investigators that Francis “was not a cautious driver and was driving recklessly, changing lanes and speeding,” despite being “unfamiliar with both the vehicle and the roadway.”

Troopers said Francis told them that he was headed to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to fly out after a radio station interview.

The FHP report states that Francis lied to investigators and claimed he had been sitting in the back seat, hadn’t been drinking and dozed off before the crash.

Troopers said Francis only had a passport from his home country of Antigua and Barbuda and not an American driver’s license.

They said a toxicology report revealed his blood alcohol content was .106% at the time of a blood draw at Broward Health Medical Center, over the legal limit of .08%.

Francis, facing multiple counts of DUI manslaughter and driving without a license causing death or serious injury, was being held without bond in the Broward Main Jail as of Thursday.

He’s also behind bars on an immigration hold.
