MIAMI –
MIAMI – Family Action Network Movement, a social services nonprofit organization, kicked off the two-day Immigration Summit in Miami’s Little Haiti.
Yareliz Mendez Zamora, of the American Friends Service Committee, attended on Friday, the first day of the summit, which ended at 7:30 p.m.
“This is not the moment to turn a blind eye,” Mendez Zamora said.
Paul Christian Namphy, of FANM, said the summit on Saturday runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Little Haiti Cultural Center at 212 NE 59 Terrace.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Marleine Bastien said President Donald Trump’s decision to put an end to the humanitarian temporary protected status is affecting many migrants in the area.
“They’re scared to death,” Bastien said.
She was among the advocates who were critical of the Miami commissioners who voted in favor of the police department’s cooperation with federal immigration law enforcement.
“We should all be calling on Mayor Francis Suarez and veto this agreement immediately,” Bastien said.
Bastien said the possibility that attendees could be detained was concerning. Admission is free.
“We’re not going to cancel it out of fear,” Bastien said.
