WELLINGTON, Fla. – Severe weather brought on by Hurricane Milton spawned tornadoes that ripped through Palm Beach County. Wellington, just west of West Palm Beach, was hit hard.
“It was terrifying for sure,” Wellington resident Kristen Boyd said. “Definitely the scariest thing I have ever been through.”
The twisters tore giant oak trees from the ground, flipped cars over and scattered debris throughout the Meadow Wood of the Landings community. But there were other areas where there was no damage at all.
“It is just crazy how one house is destroyed and the next house is fine,” resident Jessie Mills said
Resident Ricardo Johnson said he was in his home with his family when he heard that twister barreling down his street, headed right toward them, leaving behind a path of destruction.
“We hunkered down on the ground. I was holding on to the doors, making sure wind wasn’t coming in,” Johnson said.
A tornado picked a vehicle up and sent it crashing right through a home’s roof and onto other vehicles inside a garage.
his car here was actually right behind this vehicle and somehow went airborne, landed on the roof, and the fire department actually took it down,” Johnson said.
Boyd, who lives right next door, said she saw the tornado, giving her just enough time to run back inside, grab her children and hunker down.
“As fast as we could, we got into the bathtub, the only bathroom with no windows,” she said. “That is the only part of our house that is undamaged.”
While we spotted neighbors helping neighbors pick up what was left of their homes, they said they were fortunate they survived when they knew others did not.
“Yeah, that is all that matters, that we are all okay and safe,” Boyd said. “Everything else is replaceable.”
