Tropical storm strengthens into Hurricane Gil

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — A tropical storm strengthened into Hurricane Gil on Friday in the eastern Pacific Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The category 1 hurricane was not threatening land. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was moving west-northwest at about 20 mph.

Also in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Iona was moving west-northwest with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.
