PARKLAND, Fla. — Firefighters battled a large blaze that erupted Monday morning at a property in Parkland.
The fire was reported around 5 a.m. at a barn located in the 7300 block of Northwest 82nd Terrace.
Sky 10 was above the scene shortly after 6 a.m. as large flames and heavy smoke were coming from the structure.
Maxine Gutman told Local 10 reporter Joseph Ojo that she was walking her dog when she saw the smoke and called 911.
“I called 911 and then I tried to call my neighbor across the street,” she said. “They didn’t answer so I ran over there. I knocked, I rang the bell, I was banging on windows and I finally got them up.”
Firefighters said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.
It would take about 50 firefighters to get the blaze under control.
“We received a 911 call at about 5 a.m. from the resident here that their guest house barn behind their home was on fire. When our crews arrived, they found that barn fully engulfed in fire,” Deputy Fire Chief Michael Moser, of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, said. “It was a pretty extensive fire. It took our crews almost a couple of hours to completely put it out.”
The barn is now a total loss.
Sky 10 footage shows extensive damage to the roof of the barn and firefighters were seen laying water on it as the barn continued to smoke.
Moser told Local 10 that one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for heat-related issues.
No other injuries were reported.
“There was a coup with some chickens in there. We were able to open it up after we spoke with the homeowner and let them out,” Moser said.
Neighbors, like Gutman, say the significant damage to the home put a spotlight on the need for fire hydrants in the community.
“Our neighborhood does not have fire hydrants and I’ve been fighting for the last 10 years since I moved into this house to get fire hydrants for our neighborhood,” she said.
Fire rescue officials, however, say at no point in this firefight was there a shortage of water.
“This is not the first time that we been to a fire where there hasn’t been a fire hydrant close by -- we figure it out,” Moser said.
The fire comes just days after a horse was killed and another was injured in another barn fire in Coconut Creek.
That fire was reported at about 5 am. Thursday at Red Stone Ranch and Rescue, located at 4551 Northwest 39th Ave.
The cause of both fires remain under investigation.
