Marco Rubio facing criticism for silence during Zelenskyy meeting in Oval Office

MIAMI — Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in the Oval Office during last week’s contentious meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Rubio remained silent during the meeting as Ukraine’s wartime president, who was there as an ally, was treated like an enemy.

His silence gave way to a weekend of explaining and defending what happened.

“He’s trying to get Russia to the table to see if there’s a way to bring about an end to this conflict. That’s his goal,” Rubio said.

Rubio’s about-face on his own past positions against Russia and dictatorship took a beating on social media as he, now acting as Trump’s chief foreign diplomat, made posts defending his boss.

“It was explained to them repeatedly, and that is ‘Here is our strategy, we’re trying to get Putin to a negotiating table,’” Rubio said. “Everyone knows the history here, the back and forth.”

Rubio’s comments were confusing to many, including South Florida-based host of “The View,” Ana Navarro.

“What shame, what lies you have given me Marco. I am so embarrassed and ashamed,” said Navarro. “Marco has spent his entire career talking against tyranny, talking against Putin.”

From the day Rubio was sworn in as Secretary of State, he made clear he would carry out the president’s platform.

As that played out Friday, calls have mounted for him to resign.
