MIAMI – A woman, who had celebrated her 28th birthday on Wednesday, died after a police-involved shooting early Saturday morning in Wynwood.
Relatives identified the innocent bystander as Evelyn Valdes, who was “known for her warm smile, kind heart, and the way she could bring light into any room.”
Officer Michael Vega, a spokesman for the Miami Police Department, reported the woman was among two dead and one injured at Northwest 23 Street and First Place.
“Officers observed a male who was armed, subsequently shots were fired,” Vega said.
Tony Aguilera, a witness, said there was panic after shots were fired at about 3 a.m.
“It was just people trying to get out of here as quick as possible,” Aguilera said. “Nobody knew exactly what was going on, we just heard the gunshots.”
The gunman also died and another man was injured, police said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the police shooting.
Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
