Miami firefighter accused of exposing himself to woman while driving in South Miami

Arrest report: Suspect also suspected in Coral Gables incidents

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A 34-year-old firefighter from the City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue, was arrested Tuesday by South Miami police after a woman reported that he had exposed his penis to her, authorities confirmed.

According to an arrest report, the incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. June 7 in the area of Southwest 86th Street and 59th Avenue.

Police said the victim told officers that she was walking in the area when she noticed a black Dodge Charger was following her.

According to the report, Demetrious Reshad Sams, of Miami, was behind the wheel of the car.

The victim told police that Sams rolled down the window and she saw that he was masturbating and “leaning his exposed penis against the vehicle window in plain view.”

The report states the victim, “startled and afraid,” ran into the street and screamed, prompting Sams to drive off eastbound on 86th Street.

According to the report, the victim told officers there is a community WhatsApp group chat in which several neighbors reported seeing the same Charger in the area.

Police then obtained surveillance video showing the Charger driving through the area that day, the report stated.

According to police, during the investigation, a detective with SMPD was contacted by a Coral Gables police detective who said Sams’ vehicle was involved in multiple similar indecent exposure incidents in their jurisdiction.

Sams was located Tuesday and was arrested on an indecent exposure charge.

According to the report, Sams told detectives that he “did not recall masturbating in public.”

MFR released a statement Wednesday, confirming that Sams has been employed by the department for four years.

“At this time, we have not been in contact with the individual. Once contact is established, the department will initiate a thorough internal investigation in accordance with our policies and procedures,” the statement read. “The department holds all personnel to the highest standards and does not tolerate conduct, on or off duty, that is inconsistent with the values of a City of Miami Firefighter.”

As of Wednesday morning, Sams was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His bond was listed in online jail records as “to be set.”
