Sarah Kemeness named head of school at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School
St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School (STEPS), one of Miami’s elite schools for Preschool – Grade 5 has announced the appointment of Sarah Kemeness as new head of school effective July 1. “At St. Thomas, our school is a ministry of our parish” said Reverend Timothy Fleck, St. Thomas’ priest-in-charge. She currently resides in Palm Beach, but will be relocating to South Miami in order to be close to St. Thomas’ community. Located in Coral Gables, Florida, St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School (STEPS) was founded in 1953. Now in its 69th year, St. Thomas has grown to include grades junior preschool through fifth grade and has 425 students.

Vaccination process continues in South Florida as age requirement will lower on Monday
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Additional COVID-19 vaccine sites are opening up across South Florida as the state prepares to lower its age requirements for those wanting to get the shot. “It’s a one day shot, and then we move around the county, and we set-up different places that we can do it,” said Miami-Dade County Emergency Management Director Frank Rollason. Coming up on Monday, the state will lower the age cutoff for vaccination to those 50 and older, no questions asked. The mayor of Miami-Dade County going one step further, tweeting that she will lower the age by another 10 years at all county-run sites the following week. Starting Monday, March 22, Miami-Dade County vaccine sites will begin vaccinating people 50 & older.
A 10-mile long park is springing up in Miami, in an unlikely place
MIAMI, Fla. – “The Underline” is a park that is starting to spring up, on the underside of the Miami Metrorail. The first phase, from the Brickell Station to the Vizcaya Station, was unveiled on Friday during a ribbon cutting ceremony. When completed, it will stretch from Downtown Miami to South Miami. It will fill in the open spaces underneath the Metrorail, giving residents and visitors a chance to spread out a bit and enjoy the scenery, as they make their way around Miami. When completed, it will take up the 10 miles underneath the tracks.
Police: Man arrested after fleeing from officer, running into home in South Miami
SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – A career burglar was arrested Tuesday morning after he fled from an officer during a traffic stop in South Miami and then broke into a home, authorities said. According to a South Miami police Detective Fernando Bosch, the suspect was a passenger inside a car that was stopped by an officer in the area of Southwest 59th Place and 68th Street for running a stop sign. The detective said the driver and the passenger, who is wanted in connection with several burglaries, fled from the car and the passenger ran into a nearby home. No one was inside the home at the time, Bosch confirmed. A K-9 unit was called to the scene and the suspect, identified as Damian Kelly, was taken into custody.
There is hope for Bougainvillea’s Old Florida Tavern in South Miami
SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – The Bougainvillea’s Old Florida Tavern in South Miami had been facing a threat of eviction as the bar’s lease ends on Nov. 30. But after a social media campaign, there was hope for the staple of the Miami-Dade County bar scene. A small wooden cottage at 7221 SW 58 Ave. has been the home of the quaint Bougie’s bar for about two decades. As the coronavirus pandemic hit South Florida in mid-March, the bar closed and reopened on Oct. 16 at limited capacity. We are grateful that the Bacardi family has opened their hearts & ears.”

Pedestrian killed on US 1 in South Miami
SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – Officers are investigating how a pedestrian was killed on Friday night in South Miami. A driver traveling southbound on U.S. 1 when the impact killed the pedestrian near Southwest 63rd Street, police said. The driver waited for police officers to arrive. A yellow tarp covered the victim’s body for hours, as investigators questioned the driver and a passenger.
Peaceful cycling protesters in Miami-Dade say theyre on two wheels for one reason
MIAMI Protesters in South Florida say they won't stop demanding change until they actually see it. Dozens of cyclists arrived in South Miami early Sunday to begin their ride, which will end at the Freedom Tower. The riders say they are on 'two wheels for one reason' which is the lives lost due to racial injustice. The ride started at SW 152nd Street and US-1 in south Miami-Dade County and continued to the Dadeland South Metrorail Station, where they boarded the Metrorail and began heading towards Downtown Miami. Protests continue across the United States following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – A new drive-through coronavirus testing site at the South Dade Government Center has opened in Cutler Bay. The new site, which is located at the South Dade Government Center, is offering up to 300 appointments per day. The center is at 10710 SW 211 St. in Cutler Bay, making it an ideal location for those living in Homestead, Florida City and other South Miami areas. Another drive-thru testing site is expected to open soon at the site of the Youth Fair. Florida sued over sanctuary policy ban
SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – The city of South Miami and immigrant advocates are suing Gov. Ron DeSantis over a new law that forces local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration officials. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by lawyers with the Southern Poverty Law Center. It says the new law will erode trust in law enforcement and lead to racial profiling. The new law prohibits local governments from enacting polices that protect immigrants who are in the country illegally from deportation.
