MIAMI — A South Miami Middle School teacher got a little extra credit Thursday for making a big impact on his students.

Social studies and civics teacher Robert Rabelo got a surprise — and it came with a $1,000 check.

The Orange Bowl Committee named Rabelo a recipient of its “Extra Yard for Teachers” program, honoring him for the difference he makes for his students.

Rabelo founded the “Power of One” club and “D-WOW Mindset of Success,” teaching his students to put others first and believe in their own potential.

On Thursday, his students got to see their teacher get a little recognition of his own.
