White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett says unemployment rate will approach Great Depression

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn on Sunday morning, Hassett said the unemployment rate could hit 16% and "the next couple of months are going to be terrible" for economic data. "We see an unemployment rate that approaches rates we saw during the Great Depression," Hassett told ABC's "This Week." "A lot will depend on what happens next," Hassett said about the chances of seeing a V-shaped economic rebound rather than a longer U-shaped return to economic growth. The insured unemployment rate, which compares those current receiving benefits to the size of the labor force, rose to 11% this past week, a weekly jump of 2.8%. That translates to "a barely believable" 23% when the Labor Department releases its unemployment rate calculation in two weeks, according to Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

As Coronavirus Spreads in Hialeah, Residents Beg Mayor for Stronger Action

Hialeah sits close to the top of the list of South Florida cities with the highest number of coronavirus cases. While COVID-19 cases have stacked up in the city the sixth-largest municipality in Florida and second-largest in Miami-Dade by population some residents have been wondering where Mayor Carlos Hernandez has been. Yet some Hialeah residents worry the city is behind the curve and have asked for more serious measures, such as an order for people to stay home for two weeks. Monica Perez, a Hialeah city council member, tells New Times the 11 p.m. curfew doesn't make much sense because residents are generally home at that hour. My office wrote two letters; one to Governor and one to Hialeah mayor.

Representative Cindy Polo Urges Miramar ICE Facility to Shut Down Operations Due to Coronavirus

// // ////MIRAMAR In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, Representative Cindy Polo (D-Hialeah) is urging the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement check-in facility in Miramar to temporarily suspend its operations. I am respectfully requesting for the Miramar ICE Facility in Broward County to temporarily suspend its physical reporting requirements due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We must follow the footsteps of the other ICE facilities in Orlando, New York, and Boston that have temporarily shut down their operations, stated Representative Polo. On March 1st, 2020, the Florida Department of Health issued a Public Health Emergency prompting municipalities and counties to promote social distancing for fifteen days as recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These same measures should be taken into account with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility located in the city of Miramar, FL, as it is a public health risk for thousands.
