Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said they received a call just after 12:15 p.m. that a man had entered the campus of Nur-Ul-Islam Academy, a school co-located with a mosque of the same name at 10600 SW 59th St., and walked into its office with a “bladed weapon,” which “protruded from his rear right pocket.”

A BSO arrest report states that Ryan Newburn, 43, of Pembroke Pines, was “talking to himself” and “lying face down on the floor without speaking or engaging with staff,” causing fear.

Deputies said when they arrived at the school, Newburn “immediately threw the hatchet to the ground and lay face down.”

The report includes an alleged confession, which was redacted.

It doesn’t state whether deputies suspect that Newburn intended to harm anyone or target anyone for their religion.

It says that while he did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol, it was “unknown” whether he may have been under the influence of drugs at the time.

Deputies arrested Newburn on a charge of possessing a weapon on school property.

Appearing in court Friday, a judge ordered that he be held on a $3,500 bond, have no weapons or victim contact and not return to any school within Broward County.

He remained in the BSO Main Jail as of Friday afternoon.
