Family displaced after house fire in Cooper City
COOPER CITY, Fla. – A family has been forced from their home following a large house fire in Cooper City. It happened Saturday morning near Southwest 87th Avenue and Pine Island Road. Fire crews were met with heavy smoke and flames as the blaze spread from the home’s garage to a nearby vehicle. Firefighters were eventually able to get the fire under control and extinguish it. The family will be staying with relatives.

Doctors learn more about systemic effects of COVID-19
COOPER CITY, Fla. – Dr. Leon Maratchi with Gastro Health said that 53% of patients who have COVID-19 in the hospital have at least one G.I. symptom and 32% of all COVID patients, regardless of the severity of the illness, were also affected. Maratchi said it’s also been found that patients who have G.I. symptoms with COVID-19 typically have a more severe disease than patients without gastrointestinal issues. AdIn patients with underlying cardiac conditions, the illness has been shown to increase the likelihood of needing intubation.

In stolen golf cart, 3 burglars search Broward neighborhood for unlocked cars
COOPER CITY, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office is trying to identify three burglars spotted on camera who are accused of stealing a golf cart and then taking a ride around a Cooper City neighborhood looking for unlocked cars. BSO says it was called around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 24 with a report of a vehicle burglary in the area of Natalies Cove Road in Cooper City. Witnesses told deputies they saw people attempt to get in their cars before driving away in a golf cart. Investigators determined the golf cart was stolen from Southwest 119th Avenue about 90 minutes earlier. The burglars eventually left the golf cart at the entrance of the Natalie Cove community with the lights still on and the keys still in the ignition, deputies say.

BSO: Man gives 2 girls cash as ‘hush money’ after meeting up with them for oral sex
According to an arrest affidavit, detectives found photos and a video on McBride’s cellphone of a 12-year-old and 14-year-old girl simultaneously performing oral sex on him in the backseat of his car. Both victims told detectives that McBride gave them $50 each as “hush money,” the affidavit stated. Detectives said McBride confessed to the incident involving the two minors, as well as to giving them money. McBride told detectives that he recorded the sexual acts on his cellphone with the intent to sell the videos to his acquaintances via Snapchat and Instagram, the affidavit stated. COOPER CITY, Fla. – The man accused of causing the crash that killed Tyrone White, a Miami-Dade police captain and father of New England Patriots running back James White, has been arrested and will face charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving and speeding. Lisa White made a left turn onto Southwest 118th Avenue from the left-turn lane, when Chamblin’s vehicle hit the passenger side of White’s, BSO says. Tyrone White was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say Lisa White has been recovering at home. Tyrone White’s death rocked the local law enforcement community and the sports world.
Apologetic porch pirate says he risked all for family suffering during coronavirus recession
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Mark Andre Speight is unemployed and he recently stole two boxes from a home’s front yard, police said. Speight blamed his alleged crimes on the coronavirus recession. Speight served about six years in prison after he was convicted of petit theft in both Seminole and Orange counties. He is facing two counts of burglary and a petit theft charge. In Florida, more than three convictions for petit theft constitute a first-degree felony, which is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
Cooper City charter school evacuated due to bomb threat
COOPER CITY, Fla. – A charter school in Cooper City was evacuated Thursday morning due to a bomb threat, authorities confirmed. According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the bomb threat targeted Renaissance Charter School at 2800 N Palm Ave. Authorities said the threat does not appear to be credible, although the school was evacuated per standard protocol. Northbound lanes of Palm Avenue between Sheridan and Sterling Street were closed to traffic during the investigation. No other details were immediately released.

In the Forest Lake community, one of the victims shared surveillance video from a Ring camera showing the thief took two boxes about 30 minutes after the postal carrier delivered them on Tuesday. Videos show thief stealing from Cooper City residentsThe video shows the alleged bandit carried the boxes, placed them in the back of a silver sports utility vehicle, and drove away. On Thursday evening, Miramar detectives released photos and surveillance video showing who they believe to be the same thief. While stealing from Sapphire Bay community residents, the robber was also wearing a blue shirt and baggy khaki shorts.
Broward County schools allowing sports practices; two football programs already suspend workouts due to COVID-19 cases

Up until the beginning of this week student athletes were only permitted to participate in strength and conditioning, both indoors and outdoors. COOPER CITY, Fla. – While pregnancy and breastfeeding may be protective against some forms of breast cancer, women who are older than 30 when they first give birth have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer compared to women who’ve never given birth. “I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer,” she said. Dr. Carmen Calfa with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center said there’s a lot to learn from Hecht’s story because while pregnancy-related breast cancer is rare, it’s not unheard of. “By definition, the pregnancy-associated breast cancer includes the cancer that is diagnosed during the pregnancy and in the time that the patient is a year or two post-delivery which includes the lactation period,” Calfa said. Calfa said it’s important for women to realize that they can safely continue breast cancer screening during pregnancy.

Authorities try to wrangle live bull running loose in Cooper City neighborhood
COOPER CITY, Fla. Authorities in Broward County were called into action Tuesday night to lock horns with a very bullish adversary. Deputies responded to Cooper City where a loose bull was spotted running around a residential neighborhood. One deputy used a rope an an unsuccessful attempt to lasso the animal; its not known if that deputy has any previous calf roping experience. Local 10 was on scene and captured video of the bull running loose in the neighborhood, which can be seen at the top of this page. It is not known where the bull escaped from or who its owners are.
Retired Miami firefighter dies in Cooper City house fire, according to investigators
COOPER CITY, Fla. – A fire claimed the life of at least one person Sunday in Cooper City and the man who died in the fire is a retired city of Miami firefighter, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue. They have not yet released the man’s identity. Just after 1 p.m., members of the Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a single-family home fire in the 9400 block of SW 53rd Street, where heavy gray smoke was billowing out of the house. A spokesman for BSO Fire Rescue said that nearly 30 firefighters worked the blaze, which was primarily located in the living room. COOPER CITY, Fla. – A Margate firefighter was arrested last week for his role in a Super Bowl Sunday shooting in Cooper City. The off-duty firefighter, identified as Margate Fire Rescue Lt. Lorne Brown, 39, is the alleged gunman in the shooting, which took place during a block party for Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2. After the shooting, Lorne Brown told responding deputies he was concerned for the children and party goers, that they could be hit by passing cars. We should’ve killed you,’” Simeon Brown told Local 10 News. Lorne Brown is facing multiple charges, including first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault with a firearm.

Margate firefighter ordered held without bond following block party shooting
COOPER CITY, Fla. – Margate Fire Rescue Lt. Lorne Brown, 39, appeared in bond court Friday, a day after he was arrested in connection with a block party shooting that occurred on Super Bowl Sunday. The victim, Simeon Brown, 22, said he was driving to his girlfriend’s house in Cooper City on Sunday when the incident occurred. According to Hankerson, Lorne Brown and another neighbor approached the victim’s vehicle with their guns drawn when he returned to the area. Shortly after, Lorne Brown fired into the car, striking Simeon Brown in the arm, Hankerson said. Hankerson said the victim’s car continued driving through the block party and hit several cars before stopping in a resident’s yard.

Broward teen makes history as Cooper City High School's first female football player
COOPER CITY, Fla. - A South Florida student-athlete is making some school history. Sofia Molina is the starting kicker for Cooper City High School's football team. Sofia, at just 15 years old, is the first female football player at Cooper City High School. Sofia's father told Local 10 News that it was her skills as a soccer player that caught the attention of the Cooper City football coach. "She's a great girl, a phenomenal athlete," Cooper City junior varsity football coach Rocky Morgan said.
