Damage, flooding spread across South Florida following afternoon of poor weather

COOPER CITY, Fla. – Heavy rains and strong winds moved across South Florida on Sunday afternoon, causing damage across two counties.

Tree branches were seen falling from the sky along Interstate 595, narrowly missing vehicles driving westbound near Pine Island Road.

A massive tree came down in Cooper City near Hiatus Road and Sheridan Street, blocking an entire road in a residential neighborhood while damaging several vehicles.

“It was like a quick crack,” Sean McAndrews, who lives nearby, said. “You know, you kind of heard the crack and then the wind just kept really shaking a lot.”

Cellphone video captured by a Local 10 viewer captured a funnel cloud late Sunday afternoon, appearing to extend down to the ground, forming a tornado.

“It was a tornado,” McAndrews said. “It seemed like that you could see it and as you come out, you could see the other trees heading that way.”

In Oakland Park, a Local 10 News viewer sent in a photo of an overturned vehicle that was resting on top of another car in front of a home.

Heavy rain also came through the Pembroke Pines area and all the way south to Kendall, causing poor visibility and some flooding.

The impact of the severe weather proved to be too much for an apartment building in Tamarac where residents say they experienced water damage in several top floor units after the roof partially caved in.

No injuries were reported.
