Summer heat and scattered downpours roll through South Florida as season officially begins

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – South Florida has officially entered the summer season, but if you’ve been outside lately, you already know it’s felt like summer for months.

Heavy downpours moved quickly across parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties Saturday morning, making for a wet and tricky commute in some areas.

Despite the scattered showers, Local 10 meteorologist John Gerard said most of the region will remain dry heading into the afternoon.

He said the forecast matches what many residents have already been experiencing.

“So instead of me saying, hey, it’s summer like, now I have to drop the like part,” Gerard said. “It’s summer.”

While only about 30% of South Florida saw rainfall early in the day, the pockets that did get rain experienced fast-moving but intense downpours.

“We’ve got some pretty heavy downpours, but fortunately they’re moving really, really quickly, so they don’t stick around too long,” Gerard said.

Gerard tracked storms moving westward across I-95, including areas like Melrose Park and Lauderhill.

“It’s gonna be tough traveling on 441 there in North Broward for the next 15 to 30 minutes or so,” he added.

In Miami-Dade, showers were spotted near North Miami, and parts of the Upper Keys also got hit.

By noon, rain chances are expected to drop to just 10%, with temperatures hovering near 90 degrees.

On a brighter note, Gerard said the tropics remain calm.

“We’ve got very quiet weather still across the Gulf, the Caribbean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean,” he said. “Hostile conditions for development continue from here all the way to Africa, and the hurricane center says no development expected through the next seven days.”
