BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward County Animal Care is hoping to find a forever home for Iris, a 5-year-old dog described as a “love muffin,” just as the shelter launches a major pet adoption event this weekend.
Iris, who has been with the shelter for about five months, was featured on Local 10’s “Adopt a Pet” segment Thursday morning alongside Barbara, a shelter representative.
Despite her age, Iris still has the playful spirit of a puppy.
“You get the puppy energy without the puppy problems,” Barbara said. “She’s one of the staff and volunteer favorites, and she’s a superstar on our Broward Buddies outings.”
The timing couldn’t be better. Broward Animal Care is joining the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” event, running from July 5 through July 19. Adoption fees are waived for this promotion, with only a small registration fee required.
The shelter also offers incentives like goody bags for new pet owners, and the annual event has historically led to a high number of successful adoptions.
With the Fourth of July approaching, Barbara also offered advice to pet owners on keeping animals safe and calm during fireworks.
“If you don’t have a thunder shirt, just keep your pet indoors in a dark, quiet room,” she said. “Pets can get spooked and run off if they’re left outside.”
As for Iris, she’s ready to meet her new family.
