Ms. Pickles adopted; Humane Society of Broward hopes to find owner for playful kitten Maeva

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Humane Society of Broward County is celebrating a happy ending for one of its senior dogs — Ms. Pickles — who found a forever home on Saturday after making her debut on Local 10’s Adopt a Pet segment.

But the shelter is still hoping to find a loving home for a playful kitten named Maeva.

Ms. Pickles, a 10-year-old mixed breed, was previously adopted from the shelter but recently returned after her owner passed away.

“She’s 10 years young, and I say young because she certainly does act like a youngster,” said HSBC’s Cherie Wachter. “She is a sweet little girl ... her owner passed away and there was no one in the family that could take care of Ms. Pickles so that’s why she found herself back at the shelter.”

Weighing just 14 pounds, Ms. Pickles was described as house-trained and sociable, though she tended to bark at larger dogs. She had a slight heart murmur and used a harness for walks due to neck sensitivity, but shelter staff believed she could live a long, healthy life with routine care and the right family.

“She likes watching TV,” Wachter said before her adoption. “A leisurely walk and then she wants to just hang out on the couch.”

On Saturday, she got her wish — and a new home — thanks to her appearance on television.

Still waiting for her perfect match is Maeva, a 9-week-old kitten who arrived at the shelter with four siblings. The litter has been at the shelter for about a week and is already charming visitors in the cat adoption room.

“We have lots of kittens at the shelter,” Wachter said. “So if you’ve thought about adopting a kitten, now is the time to stop by.”

HSBC is open for adoptions daily, with same-day adoptions available until 5:30 p.m.Potential adopters are encouraged to visit humanebroward.com to fill out a pre-adoption application before visiting in person.
