Police make arrest in murder case of Pompano Beach smoke shop owner

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — It’s been more than three months since Sayf Abdelaziz was shot to death at a Pompano Beach smoke shop.

On Monday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office announced that Georgia authorities arrested Claurry Paul, 25, in connection with the 27-year-old’s murder.

He was arrested at an apartment in metro Atlanta and taken to the DeKalb County, Georgia jail.

The murder happened at Fire Up Smoke Shop at 1251 E. Sample Road, a business that is owned by Abdelaziz and his family.

In April, Local 10 News sat down with Abdelaziz’s family.

His brother said just after midnight, a man, whom deputies identified as Paul, walked in and shot Abdelaziz.

“My brother didn’t even see it coming; he got shot in the back of the head,” said Hussein Abdelaziz.

The two were closing up shop together that night, he said.

It was a single shot that killed Abdelaziz.

The shooter didn’t rob the store, didn’t say anything, and ran out.

The family put up a $60,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Right now, it is not known if a tip led police to Paul, who will eventually be extradited back to Broward County.
