CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A rising tennis star from Coral Springs is calling on the South Florida community for support as she competes for a national youth athlete award.

Skyelyn Johnson, 12, says she has been playing for around three and a half years.

She’s training hard and setting ambitious goals. “I have a goal in mind, and I’m going to work as hard as I can until I get there,” she said.

Skyelyn trains twice a day, two hours each session, five days a week.

“Right now I’m doing 14-unders, 16-unders and I like it because it gives me a challenge,” she said.

Her dedication is paying off. The winner of the country’s Youth Athlete of the Year competition receives $25,000 and a feature in Sports Illustrated.

“They should vote for me because I can represent them really well,” Skyelyn said. “Representing South Florida would be really good.”

She dreams big, aiming for college and professional tennis success. “I really want to go to UCLA,” she said, adding she hopes to one day compete at the Miami Open.

Local residents can support Skyelyn by voting for her in the competition. Click here for more information.
