Bad Bunny on Super Bowl LX halftime show: 'I am excited'

SAN FRANCISCO — Some Latin Trap fans who adore Bad Bunny and who love Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, the Puerto Rican poet, have a Sunday countdown, even though they don’t care about the NFL.

Some of his fans still remember when he performed with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez during the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show in 2020 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Immigration advocates who have never heard his music are proud. Despite some opposition from supporters of English-only policies, the superstar born in Bayamón to Lysaurie Ocasio, a school teacher, and Tito Martínez, a truck driver, plans to perform during the Super Bowl LX Halftime Show.

“I’m excited, but at the same time, I feel more excited about the people than even me, my family, my friends, the people who have always believed in me. This moment, the culture, that’s what makes these shows special,” he said on Thursday during an Apple Music news conference.

The six-Grammy-Award-winning artist with streaming records didn’t wear his “pava,” a Puerto Rican straw hat. He wore a gray cat-ear beanie when he walked out to his “Chambea” hit after making Grammy history with his “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” album.

“I wasn’t looking for album of the year. I wasn’t looking to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. I was just trying to connect with my roots, connect with my people, connect with myself,” he said.

He also had an inspiring message for his fans about adaptability: “You always have to be proud of who you are and where you’re from, but don’t let that limit where you can go.”

His performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, while the players of the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots take a break, won’t require anyone to understand the lyrics, just a willingness to have fun.

“It’s going to be a huge party,” he said.

Charlie Puth is set to sing the national anthem.
