PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Katherine Shary, a registered dietitian, said healthy meals can be both healthy and fun for kids going back to school.
Shary, of Strong4Life, said meal preparation can be done in advance, and the dishes can be stored in the freezer.
“We want our kids to be able to focus, and we want to make sure that their bellies have something in them,” Shary said.
Here are her six ideas:
- Breakfast: Whole-wheat toast with nut or seed butter and sliced fruit such as bananas and strawberries.
- Breakfast: Burritos with eggs, veggies, avocado, and a side of salsa.
- Breakfast: Egg muffins filled with veggies and a protein, and paired with fruit and a slice of whole-wheat toast.
- Homemade lunchables with low-sodium lunch meat, cheese, whole-wheat crackers, nut butter, a veggie, and sliced fruit.
- Leftover pasta paired with sliced veggies, hummus, and fruit
- Chicken salad with sliced apple, veggies, and whole-wheat crackers
