Health inspectors ordered several South Florida restaurants shut last week after uncovering serious health code violations, ranging from roaches and rodents, to flies, spoiled food and unsafe temperatures.

Among the closures: a Taco Bell in North Miami, the kitchen and bar at the Victoria Park Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Quesillos Guiliguíste in Miami, and Le Genie Restaurant in North Miami Beach where inspectors found the most severe problems, citing 30 separate violations.

All the places mentioned were allowed to re-open following an ordered cleanup and then a re-inspection.

Observed a single serving cereal container that has been gnawed through the package. At least 2 rodent droppings behind glass reach in at bar. At least 2 rodent droppings under hand sink in at bar.”

“Stop Sale issued on time/temperature control for safety food due to temperature abuse. Time/temperature control for safety food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. “Stop Sale issued due to food not being in a wholesome, sound condition. Observed approximately 20 live, small flying insects standing on ripped plantains on storage shelves at storage area. Observed 2 live small flying insects inside braided cheese at kitchen.”

“Stop Sale issued on time/temperature control for safety food due to temperature abuse. Observed White rice (73F - Cold Holding) as per operator for more than 4 hrs. Inside reach in cooler at storage.”

“Insect control device installed over food preparation area. Observed bug zapper over cooking spices on storage shelves at storage area.”

“Time/temperature control for safety food cold held at greater than 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Observed White rice (73F - Cold Holding) as per operator for more than 4 hrs. Observed approximately 100+ live flies in the storage room laying on top of whole vegetables like Yame, habanero peppers, dried spinach, malanga and green plantains. Observed approximately 150+ live flies flying in the storage room laying on single service items like foam containers and napkins. Observed approximately 50+ live flying insects laying on the storage shelves where mojo and different seasoning containers are stored.”

“Observed approximately 10+ dead flies in the reach in freezer.”

“Food stored on floor. Observed raw pork stored on the floor in the kitchen. Repeat Violation.”

“Wall soiled with accumulated grease, food debris, and/or dust. By handwashing sink and dishwasher and walk in freezer.”

“Stop Sale issued on time/temperature control for safety food due to temperature abuse. Observed salted pollock (67F - Cold Holding); chicken sauce (65F - Cold Holding); pork sauce (65F - Cold Holding);; raw shell egg (70F - Cold Holding) stored in the walk in cooler overnight, as per operator.”

“No currently certified food service manager on duty with four or more employees engaged in food preparation/handling.”

“No proof of required state approved employee training provided for employee hired more than 60 days ago.”
