Healthcast: Cardiologist wants you to prioritize hydration this fall

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Drinking water is not just about quenching thirst on a hot South Florida day. It’s critical for maintaining good so experts suggest one should aim for consistent, small sips throughout the day.

Dr. Glenn Hirsch, a cardiologist with National Jewish Health, said prioritizing hydration is crucial for cardiovascular health. Dehydration forces the heart to work harder.

“The blood volume is lower, and that’s going to lead your heart to have to beat faster to circulate enough oxygen to your body,” Hirsch said.

The added strain, Hirsch said, can dramatically raise heart rate and pose a serious threat -- especially for people with underlying heart conditions.

Hydration also lubricates and cushions joints, protects the spinal cord and tissues, and helps the body get rid of waste. Hirsch said it’s important to be proactive about replenishing electrolytes.

“That can be by eating salty food like chips or electrolyte drinks or even some supplements you can put into your water,” Hirsch said. “Because at some point, if you are only drinking pure water and you are sweating a lot, your sodium level is going to drop -- and that can actually be dangerous.”
