When you hear someone needs a hip replacement, you probably don’t think it’s a 12-year-old child.

Now, after a family says their faith led them to what they call a medical miracle, young Harrison Jones is up and walking again.

Jones was confined to a wheelchair for two long years due to his hip bone slipping out of place after a fall. Two surgeries didn’t help.

“Every time I moved, it hurt,” he said.

The constant pain was caused by Jones’ deteriorating hip bone and the only option was a hip replacement.

The Jones family, who lives in Fort Pierce, saw doctor after doctor, all of them refusing to do the surgery on someone so young.

Finally, Jones received news to be truly happy about.

Dr. Daniel Chan with Memorial Healthcare agreed to do the hip replacement.

“He had what is called avascular necrosis of his hip, where the ball of the hip collapsed and disintegrated, so instead of a ball and socket, he really just had a pancake and the bone was getting eroded,” said Chan.

Chan said Jones is one of the youngest patients to have a hip replacement in South Florida.

The team performing the procedure had to move all the special adult equipment to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, which was another first.

“We do a muscle sparing, minimally invasive approach,” said Chan. “We go in and remove all the diseased bone, and we put in titanium and ceramic implants that will give him a nice bearing surface that will hopefully last decades.”

Jones’ story inspired his father to write and produce a music video as a tribute to the seventh grade honor student who spiled through all the pain and never lost hope.

Chan says Jones will continue to get stronger, and since most of his bone growth at this point comes from the knees, the new hip should last him for years to come.
