Broward County Public Schools is set to announce the winner of the Teacher of the Year Award on Friday night.
The district selected five women as finalists: Dennise L. Moore, Fatima De Leon Casco, Mabel S. Colon, Iliona Tinerino-Allen, and Saima Sanaullah.
One of the finalists has been working for the district for 25 years. During her long career, Tinerino-Allen has taught first-grade students for 18 years at Pasadena Lakes Elementary School.
Two of them are passionate science teachers.
Sanaullah, who earned a doctorate at Saint Leo University, has been the science department head at Plantation High School for about seven years.
De Leon Casco is a science department chair at James S. Rickards Middle School, and she is also pursuing a doctoral degree at Saint Leo University.
Two of them are passionate about communication.
Moore is a literacy coach at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School.
Colon is an ESE support facilitator at Orange Brook Elementary School.
