More than 3,000 attend slain Indian River deputy’s funeral

VERO BEACH, Fla. — More than 3,000 people attended the funeral of a slain deputy on Tuesday in Vero Beach.

Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said 25-year veteran Sgt. Terri Sweeting Mashkow’s had the largest turnout in the county’s history.

There weren’t enough seats at the Corporate Air hangar, so deputies opened a room that filled up with about 1,000 people standing.

The fatal shootout was during an eviction on Nov. 21, in the 1100 block of Governor’s Way.

Michael Halberstam shot Sweeting Mashkow, Deputy Florentino Ariz, and David Long, a locksmith, according to deputies.

Sweeting Mashkow 47; Long, 78; and Halberstam, 37, died. Ariz was shot in the shoulder and survived.

Sweeting-Mashkow was posthumously promoted to sergeant.
