Cold-stunned green sea turtles get a hand in the Florida Keys

Florida's green sea turtles suffer in low temperatures

MARATHON, Fla. — Temperatures in the Florida Keys have been at their lowest in 15 years, and without the ability to regulate their body temperature, the green sea turtles are suffering.

On Thursday, a group of about 20 cold-blooded sea turtles was at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, where experts were working hard to nurse some back to health in a 74-degree tank.

There was a rescue picked up at the Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton, where they named the juvenile “Punx." The others at 2396 Overseas Highway include Ground Hug, Nutella, Rosie, Flynn, and Petunia.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported rescuing about 500 turtles statewide, including 20 that were staying warm in an aquarium in Clearwater.
