PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Wednesday is the deadline after which TSA rules will be tightening for travelers when it comes to your ID.
It’s not something South Floridians will want to procrastinate on based on the long lines seen at many local DMV locations.
In two days, TSA will start looking for the Real ID with the star in the corner. Anyone without one of these IDs will require additional screening.
“It’s in order to enhance our identity systems, so we can make sure the people that are traveling are actually who they’re supposed to be,” said Federal Security Director Stephen Taber.
There are alternatives, such as a passport or a second form of government identification.
TSA says if you show up to the airport without the proper ID, you’ll still be able to fly, but getting to your gate might take longer.
“We will verify the ID that they do have, and they may go through additional screening, but they will still be able to travel,” said Taber.
The last thing you want are any delays but it’s not the ones at the airport you should be worried about, it’s the ones at the DMV.
“I’ve been waiting with my granddaughter since 3 o’clock in the morning,” Marie Saintilor said at one DMV location.
“My girlfriend’s birthday is Friday and I want to travel and I can’t without that ID,” said Kerry Joseph.
Whether it’s for a trip or peace of mind, getting your Real ID now could save you time later.
TSA says Florida is in great shape so far as over 98% of Florida residents have the Real ID.
