Officer Mike Vega, a Miami Police Department spokesperson, said they were alerted to the shooting at around 2:05 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter alert.

Vega said the man was critically wounded and was later pronounced dead at Jackson Memorial Hospital. The shooter, who was being detained, is claiming self-defense, police said.

Vega described the shooter as “cooperative” and said police recovered three guns. In addition to the shooter, police said they were interviewing two witnesses.

Authorities said more than a dozen rounds were fired, though it’s unclear whether both parties opened fire.
