Officer Mike Vega, a Miami Police Department spokesman, said ShotSpotter tech alerted police officers to a shooting at about 2:05 p.m., near Northwest Fourth Avenue and 71st Street.

“We heard the rapid gunfire and then afterward a single shot,” Maria Izaguirre, who lives in a third-floor unit in the area, said in Spanish.

Vega said the gunman waited for police officers and claimed that he had fired to protect himself. The wounded man died at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, police said.

Police officers surrounded a BMW sports utility vehicle and seized three guns, according to Vega. A girl was among the witnesses, police said.

Police officers said more than a dozen rounds were fired, though it was unclear whether both men opened fire.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
