Miami cop who moonlighted as tax preparer pleads guilty to COVID-19 relief fraud

MIAMI — An officer with the Miami Police Department who worked as a tax preparer in his off time pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection with fraudulent applications for COVID-19 relief loans, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Tramaine Liptrot, 43, besides being an MPD officer, owned Liptrots Tax Services, for which he fraudulently obtained two Paycheck Protection Program loans, prosecutors said.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Liptrot “has been relieved of duty.”

He entered the guilty plea in Miami federal court on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said he could get up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced on Aug. 6.
