MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was taken into custody Saturday evening after a prolonged SWAT standoff in southwest Miami-Dade, during which he allegedly assaulted his three children, according to authorities.
Deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said they were dispatched around 2 p.m. to an apartment in the 2000 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue after receiving reports that a man had slammed his 5-year-old son against a wall.
Authorities said the child suffered a laceration and was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
MDSO later told Local 10 News that the man allegedly attacked all three of his children. The other two were evaluated at the scene and released to their mother.
When deputies arrived, the man refused to come out of the residence, prompting a standoff that lasted several hours.
A SWAT team deployed at least six tear gas canisters—four initially, and two more after the suspect moved to a different room before entering the apartment and taking him into custody.
Dramatic video from the scene showed SWAT officers breaking windows to make entry. No officers were injured during the operation.
“It’s relatively quiet, so this is jarring,” one neighbor told Local 10 News. “It’s concerning and it’s scary.”
The man’s identity and pending charges have not yet been released.
