SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Roberto Samcam, a Nicaraguan ex-military officer who opposed the 2018 crackdown on protesters, was killed on Thursday while living in exile in Costa Rica.
The former Sandinista, who became an outspoken critic of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo and their tactics of repression against Catholics and students, was 66.
Samcam was the author of “Ortega: Nicaragua’s Calvary‚” published in 2022, which presents the timeline that preceded Ortega’s motorized mobs.
Samcam’s wife, Claudia Vargas, told Reuters the killer was riding a motorcycle and pretended to be a delivery driver on Thursday morning in San Jose.
