MIAMI — Police officers and deputies met for active-shooter training on Tuesday ahead of Miami-Dade County Public Schools students’ return to class on Aug. 14.
Miami-Dade Schools Police Department Chief Ivan Silva and Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office Assistant Sheriff Eric Garcia talked to reporters.
“We take all these threats very seriously,” Silva said.
While the drill focused on “neutralizing” the shooter, the law enforcement community was also preparing for preventive investigations.
Silva said many of the kids who are making threats of violence don’t realize detectives are ready to identify and arrest them.
“A lot of students doing this think it’s a prank, it’s a joke, it’s going to go away,” Silva said. “They don’t realize this is going to be a felony arrest on their record, which could affect them going to college, military, or getting a job later in life.”
