PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — An investigation is underway after a small plane originating from North Perry Airport in Pembroke Pines crashed just after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Turks and Caicos, killing one person and injuring another, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The Cessna 210 was carrying two people when it made a distress call approaching the Howard Hamilton International Airport, according to a representative from the Turks and Caicos Islands Airport Authority.
The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed Wednesday that the small plane was inbound from North Perry Airport prior to crashing a mile from reaching the runway for what they are currently saying are “unknown reasons.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the crash site, rescuing one passenger who was taken to a hospital and is currently in stable condition, authorities said.
“Our thoughts remain with the individuals involved in the crash and their loved ones. We wish them all the best,” said Nikeva Ariza, a Turks and Caicos Islands Airport spokesperson said in a phone interview with Local 10 News.
South Florida pilot Emanuel Cuesta told Local 10 News that he’s seen the Cessna fly in and out of North Perry Airport several times and his heart focuses solely on his aviation community.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved.
