MIAMI — A Miami man lost his patience last month with staff at a medical center, resulting in him threatening to blow up the facility, police said.
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the incident occurred July 7, but the suspect, Gregory Thomas, 46, wasn’t arrested until Wednesday.
Police said officers were called to Sanitas Medical Center, located at 1313 SW 27th Ave., around 3:30 p.m., although the incident occurred earlier that day, around 9:30 a.m.
According to the report, the call taker reported that Thomas called the facility and became belligerent and threated to “shoot up and blow up” the facility.
Police said the employee reported the incident to his information technology team, who then obtained a recording of the call.
According to the arrest report, Thomas appeared to be “agitated and upset” on the call, due to waiting and “continuously being asked for information multiple times after he already had given it.”
Police confirmed that they heard Thomas say he “was going to blow it up,” and then saying he “was going to grab a gun and go shoot the Sanitas on 27th Avenue.”
According to the report, detectives interviewed a witness on July 23 who told them that she believes Thomas suffers from mental health issues and that he confessed to her that he had threated to shoot up the medical center, telling her, “How else was I supposed to get them to listen?”
The report states that Thomas was arrested Wednesday at his home in Miami.
Police said he admitted to calling the medical center on multiple occasions to schedule medical appointments and obtain a primary care physician.
According to the report, Thomas acknowledged that he was upset during the phone call in question, but said he did not recall making any threats to blow up or shoot up the facility due to all the medication he takes.
Thomas was arrested on a charge of making a false report about a bomb.
As of Thursday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $7,500 bond.
