Fire officials said crews were dispatched around 1:50 p.m. to the 7500 block of Northwest 82nd Place, a heavily industrialized area, after receiving reports of a fire at a commercial auto warehouse.

Cellphone video captured what appeared to be tires engulfed in flames, with thick, dark smoke billowing into the air.

“It was a working warehouse at the time of the fire,” said MDFR spokesperson Erica Benitez. “Everyone was evacuated safely. We don’t have the number yet of how many were evacuated.”

Fire officials confirmed that employees were inside the warehouse when the fire broke out.

They said several of them attempted to use fire extinguishers before evacuating.

The building, which houses auto parts and mechanical equipment including engines, tires, and fuel containers, posed additional hazards that contributed to the blaze’s intensity.

“We have many materials burned. This is what is creating the heavy black smoke,” Benitez added.

Due to the size of the warehouse and the rapid spread of flames, the incident was upgraded to a third-alarm fire, triggering a response from more than 30 fire units, including aerial and hazardous materials teams.

Authorities said a partial roof collapse forced firefighters into a defensive attack, battling the blaze from the outside.

They said the fire is now under control, there are no reported injuries and the cause of the blaze is being investigated.
