MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A house fire that broke out early Thursday morning in southwest Miami-Dade claimed the lives of two dogs and prompted a major emergency response, authorities confirmed.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it received the call just before 7:45 a.m. on Aug. 14, with over 10 fire rescue units responding to a First Alarm fire near the 26000 block of Southwest 154th Avenue.
Firefighters arriving at the scene said they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a carport containing two vehicles, with the blaze quickly extending into the home’s garage and eaves.
Crews deployed hose lines to attack the fire and used a ladder to gain access to the roof in an effort to contain and extinguish the flames.
During a search of the home, authorities said they were able to rescue one pet, which was safely reunited with its family. However, two other family dogs were found deceased inside the structure.
“There were no reported injuries to any residents,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a statement, adding that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Sky 10 aerial footage showed thick, gray smoke billowing from the home as firefighters worked to knock down the flames.
A man at the scene, who told Local 10’s Walter Murphy that he helps care for the animals, said the homeowners are often out of town and he was unsure of their whereabouts at the time of the fire.
He described the dogs as medium-sized and said the structure of the home may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
By the time a Local 10 News crew arrived, the fire had been extinguished. While four fire trucks initially responded, they had since cleared the scene.
