Miami International Airport reopens Skytrain following 2-year closure

MIAMI — The entire Skytrain that runs along a busy Concourse D at Miami International Airport is back open for the first time in nearly two years.

“We’re very happy our passengers are safe and we were able to fix the system and make repairs,” said airport director and CEO Ralph Cutie.

In September 2023, a routine inspection uncovered cracks in support columns, and Cutie made an emergency move to shut the entire railway down.

Six months later, 75% of the train system reopened, but the worst of the cracks near Station 1 still required more extensive repairs.

After finishing the work and several days of testing, Cutie said the system is back up and running as of Wednesday.

All eyes have been on MIA since Miami-Dade County leaders admitted to deferred maintenance on the aging airport.

The Skytrain’s return is in addition to MIA’s ambitious “Future-Ready” modernization plan, a $9 billion capital improvement program that is transforming many aspects of the airport.

Work continues on conveyances like elevators, escalators, and moving walkways.

Officials say 95% are operational, and of the ones not in service, more than half are in the process of being replaced.
