MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — New body camera video obtained by Local 10 News on Friday shows the arrest of a veteran Miami firefighter who authorities say was taken into custody earlier this summer after a confrontation with first responders at his southwest Miami-Dade home.
Capt. Maximo Vasquez, a 15-year veteran of Miami Fire Rescue, was arrested on June 2 and faces charges of assault on a police officer, firefighter or intake officer, misuse of 911, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence, according to jail records.
The video shows deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office taking Vasquez, 42, into custody after responding to his home regarding a report that his wife was missing.
In the video, Vasquez can be heard saying, “I’m not resisting,” as officers put handcuffs on him. “My wife is missing and this is what I get? I just want my wife.”
Authorities said Vasquez was “visibly irate and shouting” as a deputy explained that a report would be filed and gave him an MDSO case card.
Vasquez became more agitated, threw the case card at the deputy, and had previously called 911 twice “only to demean deputies that arrived on scene and demand that deputies find his wife,” deputies wrote in his arrest report.
Vasquez was initially booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center but was released on bond.
Regarding his current employment, Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez said the agency “conducted a full investigation with the cooperation of Capt. Vasquez, which concluded, and he was reinstated to full duty.”
Authorities did not say what led to the alleged disappearance of Vasquez’s wife.
It is unclear why Vasquez is facing those charges, as the video does not indicate that he physically touched any of the deputies.
