Lockart’s goal is to make sure that his Polynesian-style bar and lounge, at 3327 NE 32 Ave., for those interested in kava, a psychoactive beverage.

He wants his customers to consider Sunbelt Kava as a place to support relaxation. Instead, he said, the torrential rain caused problems for him inside and outside of his business.

“We had people here who were over ankle deep in the sidewalk. On the streets, it’s up to your shins,” Lockart said.

The flooding has been so bad that it has caused plumbing problems right behind the bar. Lockart said there is a drain near the sidewalk, but it isn’t working.

Fort Lauderdale has been implementing flood hazard mitigation strategies, and most recently asked for residents’ input on an $88 million recovery plan from the 2023 floods.
