BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — Loved ones held a vigil for a man who was shot and killed by Broward Sherriff’s Office deputies over the weekend.
An investigation into the shooting remains open and active.
“I love you since I was born,” were the words eight-year-old Octavia McFadden wrote on a wooden butterfly, a note that now stands at her father’s memorial.
Friends and family of 37-year-old Jerrell Dolison gathered along the 2000 block of Northwest Ninth Court Thursday night to honor his life.
“I want justice,” said Wendy Dolison, Jerrell’s mother. “I just want to lay my son to rest right now. I want to get away.”
It was on Sunday when deputies with the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived after receiving reports of a man with a gun.
Deputies said Dolison fired first, but the family disagrees.
Earlier in the day Sunday, family members said Dollison, a father of nine, was acting erratic due to drugs.
In video posted on social media and obtained by Lcoal 10 News, he was seen holding a gun and stepping back inside the home when shots rang out.
“The system needs to come up with ways and plans to get people in the community to help people who are (on) drugs,” said Shakira McFadden. “Nobody’s perfect.”
