SWEETWATER, Fla. — Three young men were arrested Sunday in Sweetwater after dozens of vehicles descended upon an intersection for a “street takeover,” deputies said.

According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the agency’s Homeland Security Bureau Intelligence and Investigations Section has been tasked with cracking down on intersection takeovers throughout the county.

The report states that just before 1 a.m. Sunday, a deputy spotted a red Ford Mustang “doing donuts” at the intersection of Northwest 121st Court and 22nd Street.

About 60 vehicles were at the intersection at the time, and some people were standing outside their vehicles, deputies said.

According to the report, Joshua Efrain Cuevas-Gomez, 19, of Miami, was behind the wheel of the vehicle, with Alex Hernandez-Jimenez, 18, and Jamil Antonio Sequeira-Esquivel, 20, both also of Miami, as passengers.

Deputies said the trio was pulled over at the intersection of Northwest 122nd Avenue and Sixth Street and were taken into custody.

The Mustang was towed away and has a 30-day hold on it, the report stated.

All three men were arrested on charges of drag racing/impeding traffic.

As of Monday, Cuevas-Gomez remained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $2,500 bond. The other two suspects were no longer appearing in the online jail database.
