Jail records show Edward Christopher Berry, has been in custody at the Broward Main Jail since Sept. 2.

In addition to the attempted murder charge, Berry faces several charges from an unrelated case, including false imprisonment, aggravated assault on a firefighter, officer or EMT, battery, and grand theft, records show.

Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the area of Southwest Second Avenue and Southwest 13th Street in Dania Beach around 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 30 after reports of a stabbing and an attempted armed robbery.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim suffering from a severe cut to his left arm that was bleeding heavily.

Deputies said they applied a tourniquet to slow the hemorrhage before Dania Beach Fire Rescue transported the victim to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, where he was placed in intensive care.

Investigators said surveillance video showed Berry meeting the victim in the middle of the intersection after getting off a bicycle.

Moments later, Berry appeared to swing an “unknown object” at the victim, who jumped back to avoid being stabbed, according to the report.

The report stated that Berry then chased the man, tackled him and tried multiple times to stab him, ultimately striking his left arm and causing the injury, deputies said.

Deputies said Berry fled the scene heading north on Southwest 13th Street.

The victim later told detectives that earlier that day, he and another member of the home he called “Dudu” had an argument.

After leaving the home, he said Berry — also known by the nickname “Memphis” — approached him on a Mongoose bicycle and threatened him, according to the report.

Berry then told the victim, “If you go by 7-Eleven, I am going to kill you with a gun,” the report stated.

The victim said he replied, “Yes, sir,” before Berry became angry and stabbed him, according to investigators.

Detectives said Berry did not demand money or property during the attack, only made threats to kill the victim. The victim later identified Berry as the suspect.

A motive for the stabbing remains unclear at this time.

As of Friday morning, Berry remained held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
