MIAMI — A standoff involving a barricaded subject inside a Miami homeless shelter prompted a heavy police response Thursday night, with SWAT teams at the scene, authorities said.

According to Miami police, the incident began around 8:30 p.m., when officers responded to a call involving a barricaded individual at the Camillus House near Northwest Third Court and Fourth Street.

Police confirmed that one officer fired a shot during the incident.

According to police, the suspect was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. Friday. His identity was not immediately released.

Barricaded suspect prompts SWAT response

Earlier Friday morning, police tape surrounded the Camillus House, where investigators were seen walking in and out of a sliding glass door riddled with bullet holes.

Detectives confirmed those bullet holes were connected to the overnight incident.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene early Friday morning as officers and crime scene investigators were seen photographing and marking evidence. Police said the area was still being processed, but Northwest Third Court and Fourth Street have since reopened.

A resident told Local 10’s Isabella Martin that he was surprised to hear that there was an issue that occurred in the area.

“Mostly veterans live here. All of the people that were living here that weren’t so good all got evicted or left on their own so I’m surprised,” he said.

Genesis Bustos, who lives nearby, said she was walking her kids to a doctor’s appointment when she spotted the police activity and tried stay out of the way.

“Sometimes bad things happen and they can keep happening so I just mind my business,” she said.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
