MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devin Jaramillo was 27 years old when he was fatally shot on Friday in the Kendall District.
Jaramillo earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and corrections from the University of Central Florida and interned with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Jaramillo served as a police officer with the Coral Gables Police Department for nearly four years. After solving several theft cases, he received the police officer of the month award in July 2023.
“His dedication, courage, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten,” Coral Gables Chief Edward James Hudak wrote in a statement.
On Friday night, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz announced Jaramillo had been “brutally attacked and murdered” while responding to a traffic crash.
Sources said Jaramillo’s attacker had been the subject of a domestic violence call that Jaramillo had responded to in the Kendall District.
Cordero Stutz said good Samaritans called 911, and despite all efforts to save his life, Jaramillo died at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
“The next few days are going to be very difficult for us,” Cordero Stutz said, her voice breaking. “We will still continue to make this county safe.”
Jaramillo had followed in the footsteps of his father, David Jaramillo, a retired MDSO detective who served as the president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.
