Miami-Dade mayor pardons 'Noche Buena' pig at Latin Cafe 2000

MIAMI — Good news: “67″ will not be in a “Caja China” or on the dinner table this “Noche Buena.”

That’s the name of the little 6-week-old pig that Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava pardoned on Tuesday.

Levine Cava laughed, but she also used the ceremony as an opportunity to talk about animal rights.

“For those that are used to eating ”Caja China," that’s roasted pig, we understand, but we also want to make sure that they recognize these animals deserve our respect," Levine Cava said.

The pardoning ceremony was at the Latin Cafe 2000 in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood. It was the cafe’s 8th annual pig pardoning ceremony.

“We are about caring, about giving back, and bringing people together,” said Louis Fonseca, of Pig Roast Command, who promised that the “67″ pig was going to live the rest of his days as a beloved mascot.
