The driver of a white pick-up truck struck 70-year-old John Davis on Monday night in Fort Lauderdale.
Detectives are investigating the fatal hit-and-run crash that was caught on surveillance video along West Sunrise Boulevard.
“My daughter called me crying and said, ‘Grandpa is on the side of the road dead,’” Jazzlyn Simmons said. “So, I started crying and panicking.”
Simmons, who is pregnant with her third child, said she was already grieving her mother, who died in November.
“I just want justice,” Simmons said.
The manager of a minimart near the scene of the fatal hit-and-run said Davis was a regular customer who was always nice. He believes Davis was on his way to the minimart when the driver struck him.
“They said he tripped over his sock and his shoe, and when he fell, he hit the pavement, and that’s what killed him, as he got closer because other folks were scared to get up close,” he said. “He had a hole in his head and mouth full of blood.”
Simmons it pained her that her 17-year-old daughter had to see her grandfather dead.
“I would like someone to come forward,” Simmons said. “I want justice and peace for all. This is terrible. I’m hoping they release some information. We’r hurting so bad. All my brothers, incarcerated. I’m just doing this by myself.”
