Miami commissioner wants to fix the abandoned shopping carts’ eyesore

Miami commissioner aims to fix shopping cart problem

MIAMI — In some areas of Miami, there are so many shopping carts on streets and sidewalks that the city’s removal crew sometimes can’t keep up.

Miami Commissioner Rolando Escalona said code enforcement is reporting property owners, and his team is working on a public awareness campaign.

Escalona wants to remind the public that taking a shopping cart from a store or parking lot is illegal. After the campaign, he said, city employees will get tough.

In Florida, it’s a misdemeanor, but it can escalate to a felony for repeat offenders, or those involved in a high-value theft, or other criminal acts.
